Mangala, also called Angaraka, is a ferocious god with four hands. He is considered to be the son of Prithvi or Bhumi, the Earth Goddess. He is of Tamas Guna in nature and represents Energetic action, confidence and ego. Mars is referred to as a ‘hot planet’ and protector of Dharma. He holds weapons in his two hands while the other two hands are held in abhaya and varada mudras. Mesha rashi (Medam) and Vrischika Rashi (Vrischigam) (Aries and Scorpio signs) are ruled by Mangala or planet Mars. He controls the muscular system of the body an also rules over nose, forehead and circulatory systems. His vehicle is Ram (a type of sheep) and his color is red. The day of Mangala or Mars is Tuesday and gemstone is coral.

Lord Chandra – The Moon God

Chandra is a lunar deity and is also known as Soma. The Moon represents the mind, feminine nature, beauty and happiness. Chandra has only a face and two hands but no body. He is shown holding white lotuses in his two hands. He is believed to ride his chariot across the sky every night, pulled by ten white horses or an antelope. He is also called ‘Nishadipati’ and ‘Kshuparaka’. Lord Chandra is also one of the Gods of Fertility. Chandra is the god of Karka rashi or cancer zodiac sign. The mental stability and well being of a person largely depends on the placement of the moon in his horoscope. As Soma he presides over ‘Somavar’ or Monday and gemstone is pearl.

Lord Surya – The Sun God

Surya is the chief, the solar deity, one of the Adityas, son of Kashyapa and one of his wives Aditi, of Indra, or of Dyaus Pita. Lord Surya or the Sun God occupies the central place amongst the navagrahas facing the east. Also known as Ravi, Surya is the Lord of ‘Simha Rashi’ or Leo sign in Zodiac. Surya’s vahana is a chariot drawn by seven horses. The seven horses represent the seven colors of the white light and seven days of a week. He presides over ‘Raviwar’ or Sunday, his color is red and gemstone is ruby. The grain associated with the Sun is whole wheat and the number associated to the Surya is 1. The practice of doing Surya Namaskar is a good practice for a healthy life.

Up to a great extent, the performance of a child is linked to the direction they face while studying and the ambiance of their room. It is not the duration of time a child spends on studies, but their concentration and grasping power that help. Having a suitable atmosphere in the study room which can improve their concentration level and learning capacity, is important.

Important Tips

• The study room should always be facing the east or west direction of the house, north is the second best direction.

• The child should face east or north while studying and all their rewards and recognitions, certificates, trophies and motivational posters should be displayed on the north or east wall. No beam or cabinet should be over their study table.

• Do not have a door right behind the study chair. Instead, have a wall behind it.

• The study table should have an open area in front, if that's not possible and table has to be along the wall, then leave a slight gap between the study table and the adjoining wall for circulation of energies.

• Don't let the child stare at an empty wall in the front, and, hang a poster on the wall that motivates them.

• The study table should be square or rectangular in shape and clear quartz can be kept on the table to enhance the child's concentration.

• Keep east and north walls light while south and west walls can have cupboard or storage cabinets for books. Do not stack books on the study table; instead keep them in a closed cabinet.

• The table lamp should be kept on the left of the study table, to ensure light without hindrance, and computer should either be in southeast or northwest of the table.

• There should not be any mirror visible from the study table; it causes distraction.

• Colours used in the study room should be pastel and subtle. For eastern room, pale yellow and off white can be used, violet for north-east room and pastel green for a study room in north is advised. Off-white, white, ivory are the most positive colours for the study room.

A. Direction of bedroom, according to Vastu

The master bedroom should ideally be located in the south-west corner of the home, as it is linked with good health, longevity and prosperity.

North-west is also a good option and suits the guest bedroom or your children’s bedroom best.

Bedrooms in the south-east or north-east corners must be avoided as these can lead to health issues and conflicts at home.

Is your bedroom in the north-east? Here are a few remedies. Use lavender incense or aroma in the room; it is believed to fight Vastu defects in the north-east. You can also place a bowl of sea salt in the room to help offset the Vastu dosh. Pictures of Lord Ganesh or Goddess Lakshmi will ensure that the room is filled with positive energy.

Keep valuables in the north direction as this is where Kuber or the lord of wealth resides.

1. The best location for the mandir in the house is the north-east. If that doesn’t work for you, the north and the east corners will do too. West is permissible too, if nothing else works. However, avoid locating the pooja room in the south.

Kitchen Direction

It’s best to place your kitchen in the southeast direction, as this is where Agni or the lord of fire reigns supreme. If that’s not possible, north west works as well. Try not to locate the kitchen in the north, south west or north east direction, as that can lead to domestic upheavals and rifts in the family.

However, does your kitchen (for some unavoidable reason) face the north or the north east direction?

Don’t worry! Remedy it to some extent by placing the stove in the southeast direction, and ensuring that the north east corner is clutter-free. If the design permits, extend the north east corner to make space for a pooja room or a wash area. And if there’s a window in the north east, ensure that it’s kept open at all times.
